Michigan State University biologists have studied damselflies - which resemble dragonflies and are abundant as both predator and prey in wetlands - to understand what happens throughout their lifecycle from nymph to winged insect, along with what they eat, when summers grow warmer and longer. Scientists scripting supercharged scenarios caution that the difference between seasonal coping and long-term adaption is vast - and tricky to predict. Climate changes are conjuring a whirlwind ride that seems to present some creatures opportunities to thrive. ![]()

This month, Bloomsbury has published Greene's fourth book of nonfiction, "There Is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children." Greene, who has twice seen her work nominated for the National Book Award, is not the titular woman. Since that Sunday morning, she and her husband have adopted two Ethiopian orphans, with two more on the way. These questions sent Greene, now 53, on a journey as both an adoptive parent and a journalist. Admitting that she and her attorney husband in Atlanta were being driven cheerfully "insane" by their five kids, Greene asked, "Who will offer grief counseling to 12, 15, 18, 36 million children? Who will help them avoid lives of servitude or prostitution? Who will pass on to them the traditions of culture and religion, of history and government, of craft and profession? Who will help them grow up, choose the right person to marry, find work, and learn to parent their own children?" After reading an article in the New York Times estimating that more than 12 million children in sub-Saharan Africa had lost parents to AIDS - and that by 2010 those figures were expected to rise to between 25 million and 50 million - Greene wondered who was going to raise 12 million children. For Melissa Fay Greene, the enormity of the AIDS orphan crisis in Africa became impossible to ignore one Sunday morning in August 2000. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And then things really start to get strange - and passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Woman – Trapped In The Beginning Of The 20th Centuryīut it’s not solely about that. The Enchanted April is an incredible window into the condition of having a human soul and learning to figure out how to use one without a manual. What follows is a colorful dance of coincidences, emotions and conclusions. Some will keep trying to lie to even their very own selves for a long as possible – to maintain the status quo. Some of them will instantly clue into what’s happening to themselves and others. Each has her own emotional baggage – and make of that what you will. The Enchanted April is about four women who could not possibly be any more different from each other, getting put in the same, let’s say, somewhat heavenly circumstances of a spring in an Italian castle in the countryside. This book marked the beginning of the Carpathian Novels, a series revolving around an ancient and powerful race. Feehan began her Carpathian series in July 1999 with the novel Dark Prince. This book sets the groundwork for the thirty-plus books that follow and is worth reading from that aspect. While infrequent, this does occur again later in the series, with Dark Destiny coming immediately to mind. It is an underused aspect of the genre to show a reconciliation between religion and vampire-like species. I loved Father Hummer and truly enjoyed his interactions with Mikhail and Raven. Interestingly, as he gets better as a character, I like Raven less and less. Whose cold silver eyes and heated sensuality sent shivers of danger, of desire, down her slender spine. Mikhail is the first Carpathian to rediscover his emotions through a human lifemate, but that excuse doesn’t forgive his psychic sexual assault on Raven early on. However, it is still a great introduction to the world of the Carpathians, their struggles against infertility, and this world’s version of vampires. ![]() It has been years since I last read this book, and it has not aged as well as I remembered. ![]() |
